ASABA–IBUSA, DELTA STATE, NIGERIA | 15 AUGUST 2026 — The Global SDG Leadership Network – An Initiative of the International Peace Commission (IPC) successfully conducted the Asaba–Ibusa Community Clean-Up and Environmental Awareness Day 2026 on 14 August 2026 in Delta State, Nigeria.
Held under the theme “Clean Streets. Clear Drains. Healthier Communities,” the physical community activity brought together members of the Network’s Nigeria leadership team, community delegates, residents and volunteers to address waste accumulation, obstructed drainage channels and the need for greater environmental responsibility.
The project was led by Amb. Chief Nwaukor Onochie Jude, SDG Ambassador and Senior Country Representative – Nigeria. Participants assembled at Third Land Hotel in Ibusa before beginning the activity at approximately 9:00 a.m. Following an opening briefing and prayer, volunteers were equipped with shovels, cutlasses, wheelbarrows, rakes and other clean-up materials.
FROM ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS TO VISIBLE ACTION
Before the clean-up began, Amb. Jude addressed participants on the health benefits of maintaining a clean environment and the dangers associated with indiscriminate waste disposal. The team then moved into the surrounding community to clear drainage channels, remove waste and obstructions, clean public areas and engage residents on proper waste management.
The activity demonstrated that environmental leadership must extend beyond awareness messages to practical action. As the volunteers worked, residents and passers-by expressed appreciation for the initiative, while some community members joined the exercise and others indicated an interest in becoming involved with the Network.
The community engagement also provided an opportunity to explain the purpose of the Global SDG Leadership Network and its commitment to mobilizing responsible local leadership around peace, human dignity and sustainable development.
COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION AND SHARED RESPONSIBILITY
Five members of the Nigeria leadership team participated alongside community delegates and resident volunteers. The activity continued until approximately 12:05 p.m. and concluded with appreciation to the participants, closing reflections and a call for continued environmental action.
Amb. Jude encouraged residents and volunteers to carry the message of environmental responsibility into their homes and communities. He emphasized that regular sanitation and community participation are essential to creating and maintaining clean, healthy and sustainable environments.
