Today, members of the Coalition on Atrocity Prevention and Justice for Sudan mark one year since the atrocities in El Fasher with renewed calls for civilian protection, humanitarian access and accountability. Their statement highlights continuing threats to civilians and the essential contribution of Sudanese civil society and frontline responders.
The challenge reaches beyond one anniversary: how can institutions sustain attention and support when an emergency no longer dominates the headlines?
For community leaders, continuity begins with maintaining relationships, checking whether needs have changed and recognizing when people require specialist assistance. It also means remembering that recovery can involve interrupted education, lost livelihoods, separation from family and difficulty accessing services.
Public communication has a role in keeping these realities visible. During Media and Information Literacy Week, responsible leadership should connect accurate information with sustained concern for the people affected.
Keep people’s dignity central: When reporting on hardship or recovery, seek appropriate consent, protect identifying details and allow participants to decide whether their experiences are shared publicly.
Revisit an earlier commitment: Contact a partner or community representative involved in a previous activity. Ask what benefit continued, what difficulty remains and whether further support is appropriate.
Strengthen a referral connection: Verify the contact details and current availability of a credible local organisation providing a relevant service. Understand its referral process before directing people to it.
Build follow-up into the next activity: Agree on a realistic check-in date and identify who will maintain contact. Explain clearly what participants can expect.
